MLK Literature
In observance of MLK, I wanted to recommend a book that you might not know about. It's written by the one-and-only Ossie Davis, and it's called JUST LIKE MARTIN.
Here is a synopsis (courtesy, Booktalks -- Quick and Simple):
Life in their Alabama town is about to change. Fourteen year old Isaac Stone is put in charge of planning a church trip to hear Martin Luther King, Jr. speak in Washington, D.C. Isaac is a true believer of Dr. King's and tries to be a role model of non-violent behavior for others. Even when the other kids make fun of Isaac because of his beliefs, he stays true to his feelings. When Dr. King comes to the town to speak, the Isaac's family and friends are so overcome by his words that they begin to believe that their is hope that racism could be eliminated. Will Isaac's father give up his gun and his racism?

On My Plate: Holiday Reading
Just about every writer would agree that one thing all writers MUST do is read. A lot! This is true, and I might add that you should read not just to stay abreast of what others are putting out there, but because reading is a passion, same as your writing. To that end, every holiday break for me allows more time for me to read. I thought I'd share what I'll be reading over the next couple weeks.
1) FLOORS, Patrick Carman
From the Publisher:
Charlie had his chocolate factory. Stanley Yelnats had his holes. Leo has the wacky, amazing Whippet Hotel.
The Whippet Hotel is a strange place full of strange and mysterious people. Each floor has its own quirks and secrets. Leo should know most of them - he is the maintenance man's son, after all. But a whole lot more mystery gets thrown his way when a series of cryptic boxes are left for him . . . boxes that lead him to hidden floors, strange puzzles, and unexpected alliances. Leo had better be quick on his feet, because the fate of the building he loves is at stake . . . and so is Leo's own future!
2) MONSTER MADNESS (Book 2 in NIGHTMARE ACADEMY series), by Dean Lorey.
* I absolutely LOVED the first book, and immediately bought this one. A gem of a MG series.
3) SCORCH TRIALS, James Dashner (2nd book in MAZE RUNNER trilogy)
* I am already halfway through this one, but stopped when I came across Lorey's MONSTER HUNTERS series (MG always comes first for me)

From the Publisher:
It's the monster hunters' last chance to stop an all-out monster war!
We're under attack! The last of the mega-monsters known as the Named are fighting their way into our world, and only a mysterious being known as the Guardian can help—but the Guardian is dying. To save him, Charlie Benjamin and his friends from the Nightmare Academy must journey into the heart of a Hydra cave, through the spooky Bermuda Triangle graveyard, and across the treacherous, monster-filled San Diego Zoo.
3) SCORCH TRIALS, James Dashner (2nd book in MAZE RUNNER trilogy)
* I am already halfway through this one, but stopped when I came across Lorey's MONSTER HUNTERS series (MG always comes first for me)
From the Publisher:
Solving the Maze was supposed to be the end. No more puzzles. No more variables. And no more running. Thomas was sure that escape meant he and the Gladers would get their lives back. But no one really knew what sort of life they were going back to.
In the Maze, life was easy. They had food, and shelter, and safety . . . until Teresa triggered the end. In the world outside the Maze, however, the end was triggered long ago.
Burned by sun flares and baked by a new, brutal climate, the earth is a wasteland. Government has disintegrated—and with it, order—and now Cranks, people covered in festering wounds and driven to murderous insanity by the infectious disease known as the Flare, roam the crumbling cities hunting for their next victim . . . and meal.

4) DARWEN ARKWRIGHT AND THE PEREGRINE PACT, A.J. Hartley
* Read the sample for this one and loved it. High hopes.
From the Publisher:
Eleven-year-old Darwen Arkwright has spent his whole life in a tiny town in England. So when he is forced to move to Atlanta, Georgia, to live with his aunt, he knows things will be different - but what he finds there is beyond even his wildest imaginings!
Darwen discovers an enchanting world through the old mirror hanging in his closet - a world that holds as many dangers as it does wonders. Scrobblers on motorbikes with nets big enough to fit a human boy. Gnashers with no eyes, but monstrous mouths full of teeth. Flittercrakes with bat-like bodies and the faces of men. Along with his new friends Rich and Alexandra, Darwen becomes entangled in an adventure and a mystery that involves the safety of his entire school. They soon realize that the creatures are after something in our world - something that only human children possess.
